Vale End Cemetery

Home of the Blue Lady?

By Trisha Thibodeau, Assistant Director here at TrueGhost.com

In Wilton New Hampshire there is a cemetery on a hill entitled Vale End. This cemetery is widely known to be haunted by many locals. It is also a popular hang out for local and curious bi-passers of the paranormal. Although I am a firm believer in the fact that cemeteries are a resting ground, and very few are uniquely active with paranormal activity. I believe Vale End does harbor a unique feeling, and interesting activity.

For years the locals have told an urban legend of the Blue lady, or Mary Ritter. She is known to emanate a blue glow on a full harvest moon, near her grave stone. The way she passed is quite unclear. There are many stories of her being buried alive by her cheating husband, being killed in a car accident, or being murdered for the practice of witch craft. Which ever story is accurate is unknown, and adds to the sheer eeriness of her burial site. The blue lights have been seen by curious teens, and locals throughout the years. It’s her urban legend that attracts people to this site. However there are other tales of a Grover (which is a gnome like watchful spirit), of a father looking for his long lost daughter, that your car will not start if you drive it on top of the hill, and shadow people wandering the outskirts of the woods. It was all of these stories and rumors that drove me to visit back when I was a 17 yr. Old. Since then I have avidly gone in the warm seasons to research this popular place.

Some of my experiences at Vale End Cemetery include battery drainage in flashlights, cameras, and electrical malfunctions amongst other things. On one visit a friend of mine witnessed a man looking down at the ground and then he disappeared. Only later to find out this may have been the man searching for his daughter. On another visit one of my other friends got a severe headache, and nausea. When we got to the vehicle with a light, he had a large red handprint on his face as if he had been slapped. Now at the age of 20 I visit by myself as to not be tainted by others around me that may let fear cloud what there senses are feeling.

There is a section of the cemetery called the cold corner. It is here where you get a sad chilling sensation once passing into the area. It’s rumored this corner is where all the people that committed suicide are buried. There are also many gravestones with interesting gothic inscriptions on them. I also found that the outer portions of the woods are more active then the cemetery itself. Passed the woods in the back slightly, there is a large pond and stream. Shane and I know water, for several reasons, can aid in the occurrence of paranormal activity through out our experience. The woods have an ominous feeling. As if one is being watched carefully. However, I have never seen the famous blue lights reported. I have come to believe that the blue lady is not what makes this place unique, but the legend of the father and the little girl.

There is a child like sadness down the hill in the back of the cemetery. Some believed to have seen a child wandering aimlessly just as her father does. On one specific occasion I used an IC recorder to attempt to capture electronic voice phenomena (which is explained in depth by Michael on a separate page). Upon listening to the recording there was long noticeable growls, and screeches. However these noises didn’t give any proof to the legends I had researched. Although I was impressed by the screaming sounds, as an experienced investigator I concluded they could have been explained. On further visitations I have gotten footage of a small American flag swaying back and forth with no wind that night at all. Along with distinct footsteps my friend and I heard by my car, that could never be explained. They were so distinct that I knew they sounded human and not animal.

In conclusion I believe that this place is uniquely active. Although I question the existence of the blue lady due to lack of personal proof, I do believe there are other things that make this cemetery so eerie. The most accurate legend is without question the man and the lost girl, which is what I think really has a dwelling feeling. One can tell there is a sad child like feeling captured in the area with hints of a masculine presence, which is rumored to be the father. However, before going to any places such as this I recommend you check the times the cemetery is open, so as to remain out of trouble. Be sure you go with other respectful people. Remember this is a resting place for the deceased and it is trespassing if you go before or after hours posted. Please do not litter. You wouldn’t like it if trash was thrown on your personal space. Respect it, be careful, and remain level headed at places such as this. I hope my experiences and information will help on your explorations. Good luck, and stay safe!!
