Bear Brook State Park

There is a small wooded park located in Allenstown NH. It is a well known campground and recreational park where you can hike, swim, fish, camp, snowmobile, and snowshoe. There is even a museum about how the park was founded and settled. It is the largest state park in the whole state with 1000 acres! A little further past it is also many housing settlements. Not many know of this unique place, but out of every public paranormal location this tops my (Trisha) list at number one in New Hampshire! I have been going camping here ever since I was a child. It is a beautiful place and one of the only places that shows nature just as it should be. However as I grew, a child hood friend began building a house on the land up the road from the camp ground. It was at this point I began noticing that this land had an interesting and different feeling to it.

I had spent lots of weekend mornings with my friend Ashley and her family as they built their dream home. However one night in particular, as we were cleaning up the saw dust from the days construction, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It looked as if some ones shadow had stretched across the back porch. I had looked around thinking my friend Ashley was outside, but there was no one there. I had disregarded it and continued to clean the mess. As I continued my visitations I began to note how the backyard woods had a very protective native feel to it, even in the broad daylight. We use to play hide and seek at night on the outskirts of the woods and even then it was an unnerving sense. What ever it was I felt like it was there for the land. Once they were done with the house is when unusual things continued to grow.

One night I was sleeping alone in the guest room when I woke up around 1:15am to the sound of distant echoing drum beats. They were steady, rhythmical and unreal. As the beat continued the same feeling I got in the woods now filled the room. I have never been afraid of the paranormal, so if anything, my interest began to peak after that night. As I continued my visitations, the nightly drumming continued every night around 1:15am. I began to assume it was other things such as a car with a loud stereo, a dream, or maybe the next door neighbors. With these assumptions in mind, I started to follow the noise one night. There was no cars passing by and all the lights at the neighbor’s house were off. Then just as suddenly as it came the noise vanished. I became curious as to if this old camp ground was sacred Native American ground. The next morning at breakfast, I had asked Ashley if she ever heard anything unusual late at night. She had told me sometimes she wakes up to drum beats. I got excited that I was not the only one hearing it. We then had a lengthy conversation about what it sounded like.

As time in their new house went on, the drum beats still happened now and then. What woke me up to the strong potential that there was something there happened one summer morning. I began to wake up and as I opened my eyes I saw the torso of a tan shapely man wearing native clothing at the foot of my bed. The feeling was almost like I was trespassing in the house and after I blinked the apparition had vanished. With my experience at that age I disregarded it as a dream, or maybe even sleep paralysis. However my friend Ashley said she had been witnessing a native built shadow on her porch at times. I then asked her if she knew anything about historical facts on Bear Brook. She had only heard a rumor of a teacher murdering his students in the woods of the park and that at night you can hear their cries. But with every town there are urban legends and that particular one didn’t explain what we were experiencing.

It was only just recently that a story from Shane (Director) tied all these facts together. He had a fishing buddy that was up there one day on the land going from pond to pond fishing. He had actually heard from locals that if he went to far into the uncharted lands it was said a male Native elder would appear and tell you to go back. The fisherman continued pond jumping and as he strayed to the next small area to cast his pole he felt as if someone was right behind him. As if someone was breathing on him. As he continued to check behind his shoulder no one was there. Then the second time he looked an old Native male stood there face to face with him and sternly asked what he was doing. The Fisherman was so stunned and frightened he turned for a second to collect himself. After just a couple seconds he turned to answer the man, but he was gone. Needless to say this scared him horribly, he packed his fishing gear and left that spot.

I have done extensive research on the area, and I could not successfully find a lot of history on it being home to Native Tribes, but then again it was all their land. There are small references to Native Americans having a dwelling area around Bear Brook. Shane and I also feel that water has the strong potential to aid paranormal activity such as lakes, ponds or streams. Seeing as there is a large amount of water in and around Bear Brook this could be a strong contributing factor. In conclusion this place is very special and is one of few places I feel is connected to Native American energy and with all the water this amplifies it. If you are interested in this location, making a camping reservation is the best way to go!! However do not trespass on private properties and the outer boundaries of the park for your safety, from police or injury!! This is also a great hiking ground if you want to walk the paths. Have fun, and as always stay safe!!

You can make reservations or visit the Official website here, Bear Brook.
